Latest thoughts on mattresses

Hello,

In the market for a new mattress, and wondering what the latest thoughts are on mattresses? Looking for something that is non-toxic and relatively simple and affordable. Confused between coils, natural latex and natural memory foam (essentia beds)

Also wondering what the cultures that were researched in the book use to sleep on? pretty sure they are not using any fancy mattresses :)

Thanks!

Great questions!  Stay tuned for our upcoming Newsletter, Positive Stance which will be all about beds!  It should be out August 2012.  You can sign up for our free e-newsletter here:

Generally latex and foam mattress can be too squishy and we tend to sink too much where we are heaviest.  A very firm foam can work well, but can be challenging to find.  The research shows that a medium firm mattress with a high spring count is best.

And yes, it is true.  Regarding the cultures studied and their sleeping habits, there isn't a clear answer.  Generally when people have enough length in their spines then the surface upon which they sleep isn't as critical.  With enough length between the vertebrae and decompressed discs we can be tolerant of many more surfaces and little distortions here and there are not bothersome.  Of course someone with a history of back pain may not be at the this place yet, so a supportive bed is suggested.

I hope you find this helpful.

Warmly,

I can't find any archive of your past newsletters on this website. I would like to read the article about beds.

Thanks,

Consumer reports has a very helpful little video here:

They don't recommend any mattresses, but they have

good ideas about purchasing one.
